“Professionally run” business enterprises, even if so promoter-owned, are forever engaged with the process of leadership development. They add value to their team by interventions, especially in psychometric assessment, feedback, one-on-one coaching, and workshops designed to elicit talent required for leading and managing.

Leadership is one of the most desired of abilities today, yet amongst the most complex to master. The demand on you is to hold the macro-perspective, and simultaneously oversee, manage and commit to execution. You are required to stay closely connected to your team, oversee their work; and that without controlling their desire for independence and independent decision-making. 

A study indicated that CEOs of the poorest performing companies gave themselves the highest ratings on seven out of ten leadership abilities, whilst those very seven were rated as their lowest by their subordinates. Were these CEOs in touch with their own realities? (No). Unlikely therefore to be in touch with their team’s thoughts and feelings. Self-awareness and empathy are prime attributes for leaders.

There’s no shame at all in staying the specialist you are if that is what you are designed for. You will demonstrate prowess, competence, and awareness, and will excel. Optimal growth is not about getting that coveted CEO role. The additional traits and competencies required for that may well be the antithesis to your sense of success and fulfilment. In the interests of the individual and the enterprise or society, not everybody should make CEO; and some, well, some absolutely must have it thrust upon them. Their specifics allow for it.
